The Varsity Cup Vibe

Varsity Cup is without fail one of the sporting highlights of the university year. Even for those of you who don’t watch rugby, one can indulge on the vibe that comes with the mass of blue Ikey shirts. Lucky for us, we don’t have to wait long before action hits our fields, since Varsity Cup kicks off at the beginning of each the year.

On match day, it’s a beautiful sight to behold – floodlights shining down The Green Mile, stands full of supporters (hopefully) in their blue and white; drinks flowing and our mascot, the Ikey Tiger keeping the noise and spirits high.

The Ikeys returned to this season having had a tough year in 2016. With the UCT Rugby team having just finished Round 8 of the Varsity Cup, we thought it be a good idea to look at their season so far. So far, the Ikeys have played seven matches, taking away only two wins – against Central University of Technology and University of the Free State. In the much hyped-about derby of the year: Ikeys versus Maties, the University of Stellenbosch proved too good a team and the match resulted in a loss. At least from a spectator’s point of view, the evening was still packed with action! Whatever the rest of the season has in store, the Ikeys can take comfort from a Stormers captain, Siya Kolisi who brings the gees and supports us from the sidelines.

Good luck team, we’re rooting you on!
