A Newbie's Perspective

As a person coming into UCT Radio and fresh onto campus as an 'external presenter,’ I wasn’t really sure what to expect but there was an incredible & immediate sense of welcome from the team, in and around the studio!

The training process was quite intensive as I was given a lot of radio policies and practises within a short amount of time – rather than feel overwhelmed, I found it very exciting. The UCT Radio training team went through every aspect of radio in enough detail so as not to leave us completely clueless, but at the same time, not to flood us with information.

When it came time to put me on-air, I started out on the Brunch show. I didn’t feel as though I was thrown into the deep end without any support - any questions I had (or have) were always gladly assisted! Obviously, mistakes are made, but that’s always part of the experience and one will always make new mistakes, and learn from them. It’s the nature of the game. I’ve learnt that it takes a while to form a show, and there are features which work and those which don’t, but if you never try them out, you’ll never know.
So far, it’s been a great adventure, and I’m looking forward to many more!
